On Wednesday morning I ran in the ESRI User Conference's annual 5K event along the waterfront in downtown San Diego. It was a very humid morning which made it feel warmer than it actually was. I ran the race mostly on feel even through this time I remembered my Garmin watch. I went out at what felt to be fast but not red lining it and then tried to pick people off as the race went on. I ended up running 18:23 with a first mile at 6:06 then slowly picking it up and negative splitting the race. Overall average was 5:59 on my watch and I felt pretty good finishing in 9th place overall and 2nd in my age group behind the winner who ran 17:05. Not bad for absolutely no speed work. I think if I keep up my training through July & August I may be able to go sub 18 minutes this fall. |
